Mount Rogers Community Services Begins Construction on $12.7 Million Expansion of Smyth County Campus in Marion
Project Expands and Improves Behavioral Health Services in Southwest Virginia

Mount Rogers Community Services has started construction on a $12.7 million expansion of its Smyth County campus in Marion.
The project is several years in the making and will expand and improve Mount Rogers’ behavioral health services in southwest Virginia.
The project entails adding 25,000 square feet of space. The work includes extensions of the Rhea B. Lawrence Recovery Center and the Lisa H. Moore Counseling Center on Hospital Avenue.
Key features of the project include:
- Taking the crisis stabilization beds from eight to 16.
- Adding space for the crisis receiving center at the Rhea B. Lawrence Recovery Center.
- Adding a new peer center and expanding training and office space at the Lisa H. Moore Counseling Center.
Improved Services
Mount Rogers CEO Sandy Bryant said the expansion of the Smyth County campus will include outpatient mental health and substance use services, primary care services, and supportive services such as case management. It will also include a peer wellness center.
“We will have the crisis care center in the same building to avoid transporting individuals from one program to another,” Bryant said. “We are excited about these enhancements to improve access and efficiencies. We appreciate the partnerships and support that are making this project possible.”
Funding sources for the project include a $5 million U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant. Other funding is from the Smyth County Community Foundation, the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and the Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia.
Earlier this month, representatives from the USDA, ZMM Architects and Engineers, general contractor J.A. Street & Associates, and subcontractors joined Mount Rogers at a construction kickoff meeting. Site work is already underway.
Mount Rogers expects to complete the project in the late fall of 2027.
