The Mount Rogers Day Services Program Builds Hope and Support for Better Lives
Day Services Volunteering Includes Cleaning, Sorting, and Food Boxes
Four days a week we take a small team from the Mount Rogers Day Services program to Bland Ministry Center to volunteer.
Consequently, it’s just one way that our developmentally disabled folks are in the community and give back. And it’s part of how Mount Rogers Community Services offers hope and support for better lives.
At Bland Ministry Center, our team helps sort food items and pack them into food boxes. Then they load the boxes into cars.
Bland Ministry Center also has a “Clothes Closet” program. The team gathers hangers, sweeps the floor, and cleans and tidies the area.
Building Skills and Giving Back
“We have been volunteering at Bland Ministry for many years,” said Jessica Quesenberry, day services supervisor at Mount Rogers Community Services. “So, we’re building communication and relationship skills while empowering them to give back to their community.”
Other places or ways the team volunteers include:
- Wythe County Dog Shelter.
- Glenwood Church in Barren Springs.
- Assembling Feeding America boxes for Mount Rogers facilities.
Muffins for First Responders
Further, another example of being in the community is this past December around the holidays. The Mount Rogers team brought Christmas cards and fresh-baked muffins to the Wytheville Police Department and Fire Department.
Bruce Fleming, Trista Hamrick, and Antonio Vattilana, supported by our Direct Support Professional Yvonne Smith, delivered the cards and muffins.
The event supported independent living skills through cooking and food preparation. It also built social and communication skills through:
• Community interaction.
• Teamwork.
• Delivering the items.
About Day Services
This program increases the quality of life for youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We do this by teaching them skills to live the life they desire.
Because our services focus on person-centered choices we achieve the goal of meaningful community integration.
Essentially, it’s a place where people with disabilities are valued members of their community. And it’s all to fulfill the desired life – and life choices – of a person with a disability.
