Mount Rogers Field Day Brings Community Together Through Sports and Inclusion
Special Olympians Enjoy a Day of Sports and Fun
We saw a need. And sprang into action.
People with developmental disabilities have limited recreational and athletic opportunities in southwest Virginia. This is especially so in the Mount Rogers Community Services area.
It’s an area that includes the city of Galax and the counties of:
- Bland.
- Carroll.
- Grayson.
- Smyth.
- Wythe.
More than 30 Licensed Services
We operate more than 30 licensed services and we’re always working to expand them.
“Mount Rogers wants to be part of the change,” said Becca Martel, senior director of developmental and youth clinical services.
For people with developmental disabilities, which looks like providing sports and recreation opportunities.
On a cloudy, cool day in July, we gathered more than 25 athletes of all ages for a fun-filled Special Olympics Field Day. Softball, sprinting, basketball skills, agility drills, bowling – seven sports in all. Most importantly we had snacks and medals!
For the young athletes we even had pre-sport skill events.
More than Competition
Field Day is more than just a day of friendly competition. It created opportunities for athletes to connect with peers, interact with community members, and discover individual and team sports that match their interests and abilities.
The event also highlights the power of sports. We help them build confidence, friendships, and a stronger sense of belonging.
“They came for fun,” Martel said, “and they spent the day engaging with peers, community members, and learning about both individual and team sports!”
