Mount Rogers Storm Preparation in Full Swing for Winter Storm of Jan. 24-26, 2026

Residential Services has safety plan in place

Ahead of the winter storm that’s expected to bring heavy amounts of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the Mount Rogers Community Services region, our storm preparation is designed to ensure the safety of our residential clients.

On Jan. 22, Gov. Abigail D. Spanberger declared a state of emergency for Virginia ahead of the storm. Our leadership team has been monitoring the forecasts for the storm and preparing for the impacts to our region. We’re in constant communication with our facilities and services across our five-county service area and the city of Galax.

Mount Rogers is a top provider of community services for mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders in southwest Virginia. Mount Rogers also offers geriatric, counseling, early intervention, and other services in Wythe, Smyth, Carroll, Bland, and Grayson counties and the city of Galax.

Our 24/7 residential homes have the following:

• A minimum of a three-day supply of water and food.
• We’ve checked all medications to ensure a supply through the time of the storm.
• We’ve filled all autos with gas for emergencies.
• We won’t transport anyone unless it’s by ambulance in emergencies.
• All group homes have generators.
• Grayson House has an alternative location for loss of power if needed.
• Staff have committed to staying if they’re needed and as needed.
• We have ice and shovels at all locations.
• We call families to minimize their concerns about the weather.

Our sponsored residential providers follow the same emergency prep with food, water, medications, transportation, and communication. They have a backup plan for loss of power or heat.

Our leadership staff also contact each location to do check-ins and identify any issues. We also:

• Have additional blankets and other items if needed.
• Reschedule appointments due to safe travel considerations unless it’s an emergency.
